ShomiBanerjee,a self taught artist started working with pastels &brushes Ink & brushesfrom an early age.He believedin painting realism withsplashes of colors from distant shores & figuratives , could soeakmuch more if treated with right approach and freedom. Abstraction was never his cup of tea. Still at school (1963/64) he came in close contact with late Kamal Kr Majumdar( the doyen of Bengal school of arts & culture) shomi was fascinated by his lines & experimental styles. Kamal babu left a lasting impression in his young creative mind. Stalwarts like Late .Salil Bhattacharya, Sri. Paritosh Sen, Sri. Nikhilesh Das, also played an inspiring role in the then young Shomi. Still at school in a senior cate gory painting competition(1967/68) he stoo out and received the First prize from none other than SATYAJIT RAY,-that was the start .Shomi ventured further& took part in different art camps/fairs group shows ...........these years of crativity brought out a more matured in him and developed his own style. He firmly believes, abstraction as an extention of realism which is evident from his works. Hope his black & white pen &ink ,Colours , Mixed media, & several other line drawings speaks a lot about his maturity line control , space balancing ,thematic approach and style.
