Latino Artist recreates ancient monuments with Styrofoam insulation. Mid-Michigan artist, Michael L. Selley has been working on a series of relief carvings inspired by the works of Pre-Colombian cultures.

;

;

Saginaw, Michigan - November, 06 2006 - Selley has spent much of the past three years researching and carving reproductions of the art of the Aztec, Maya and other indigenous peoples. A graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Studio Art, Selley is a long time Saginaw resident.

An award winning artist, Selley usually paints abstractly with no visual reference. He began this project \"because I wanted to decorate my home with art that reflects my heritage and I have always been interested in and admired the work of indigenous people. Having had training as a sculptor I decided I\'d make my own. That was three years ago and now I\'m running out of wall space\". The first step in his process are to research and decided on a subject. Selley begins a piece by making a rough sketch directly on the surface of a sheet of high density polystyrene foam. The same as that used to insulate your home. Using only simple tools, mainly a hack saw blade, files and sand paper, he transforms the insulation into a highly polished work of art. A latex mold is then taken of each piece and it is cast in Hydro-Stone. Once the Hydro-Stone is hardened to a rock like surface the piece is hand finished reproducing the appearance of stone. Selley recently displayed several of these pieces at a lecture by indigenous shaman Tlakaelel at the Houghton-Johnson Community Center. To see more of these works you can visit his website: www.elchangoloco.com.

This website is a new experience for the artist, who considers himself computer-illiterate, but is hoping to turn his craft into profit.

el Chango Loco is an online gallery developed by mid-Michigan artist Michael L. Selley for the display and sales of a series of reproductions of Pre-Colombian art works. All items displayed are hand-carved by Selley, then cast in Hydro-Stone (made specifically made for fine art statuary).

;

;

;

     Michael L. Selley

Born June 29, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, of mixed heritage (father French/English, mother Mexican American) and raised in a mid-sized manufacturing community in Michigan.  Michael is the third of eight children, eldest of Lawrence and Anita Selley's two sons.  He grew up in a working class family and was the first in his family to graduate from college, recieving his BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University,where he studied with and was greatly influenced by Dr. Allan Leepa.  Soon after graduating Michael became a single parent and found it necessary to put aside his dreams of a career in Fine Art in order to support himself and his son, Juan.  He has since held a wide variety of positions from Firefighter to Janitor, but has never given up the practice of his Art.  Now, with his son a grown man with children of his own, Michael has given up financial security to again pursue a career in Art.  Michael has exhibited locally and sees the internet as his opportunity to gain a broader audience.

;

Michael was awarded first place in the 1997 Saginaw Art Museums Latino Artists Exhibition.  He is currently working on a series of reproductions of Pre-Columbian Art using the pseudonym el Chango Loco.  At the same time he continues to paint, emphazing composition in his, mainly, non-representational work .  He also does portraiture and illustration.  In the past his work has been featured in the Virgin Records release of Delta Hurricane by Larry McCray, intenationally known Blues Artist.  Michael currently lives in the small community of Saint Charles, Michigan with his long time partner Louisa Zizumbo.
